Most verbs we use in parts of speech in English are regular, it means that they only change a little when you use them according to the subject, tense and number. However, in order to spot them easily, you need to look for those verbs that when they are changed from Simple Present to the Past or Past Participle, they change completely, not following the regular end of –d, -ed, or –ied forms. These spelling patterns can vary a lot, and there are times where the verb may not even change at all like cut and cut, let and let, hurt and hurt and hit and hit, where both variations are different tenses but still written and spoken the same way.
They are also known are strong verbs, however, the most common but at the same time really annoying to learn how to use are these:
- Go get your sister. Dinner is ready, go sit and eat.
As you see, there are four different irregular verbs here which don’t change their form (go, get, sit and eat). These are irregular verbs.
- He wants to build a big house like the house we built two years ago
In this example, build changes to build, a normal irregular verb many people tend to forget about. Built are the Simple Past and the Participle form of a build. Learn this and you will be better off than a lot of people.
- I bet you that you wouldn’t be able to pass my record. He ran and ran but couldn’t beat my record, so I told him that he had to run faster.
As you see in the highlighted words, they are all in past simple form and some in participle. But they don’t change at all when you change them from simple to participle or present to the past. For example, bet can be used both in present and past and beat can also be used in present and past. Also, ran can be used in participle and simple past where its present form is run. Had on the other hand, is a simple past of have.
- I want to drink some beer, let’s find a bar. I drank last week with a friend when we found a good bar.
This is another example of irregular verbs. You can see how drink changes to drank it is assumed that it is in past, and where find changes to found in simple past form. These are a great example of how irregular verbs work.
